Seminar Invitation

PTFS Europe would like to invite you to the next in our series of seminars on Digital Archiving and Open Source Library Management Systems on 13th November 2008 at the RIBA, London.

Two trends are increasingly prominent – libraries worldwide considering the merits of open source library management system software and at the same time recognising the need to manage their digital collections. We would like to invite you to two seminars to outline the solutions we can offer in these areas:

SEMINAR A – THE ARCHIVALWARE DIGITAL ARCHIVING SOLUTION.

SEMINAR B – PTFS AND OPEN SOURCE LIBRARY MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS.

Both seminars are being held on the same day, with Seminar A being held in the morning and seminar B in the afternoon. You are welcome to attend either or both sessions.

SEMINAR A – THE ARCHIVALWARE DIGITAL ARCHIVING SOLUTION.
Do you have a digital archive or collection to manage? These could include Photographs, Technical reports, Manuscripts, Press Cuttings, Drawings, Theses, Local history collections, in fact, anything digital.  The aim of the seminar is to outline the issues to consider when implementing a digital archive together with an overview of PTFS Europe and an introduction to the ArchivalWare digital archiving solution.

ArchivalWare is a fully web based product offering the ability to manage records in a wide range of formats, an outstanding retrieval capability and a range of advanced administrative features.  It can also offer the tightest possible integration with your current library management system (LMS), whether it be from SirsiDynix, DS, Talis or any other LMS supplier. We will also describe the upgrade path from your current digital archiving system such as Hyperion or Calm.

In the seminar we will compare the benefits of having a system hosted by yourselves or whether to use Software as a Service (SaaS) where we can host the system for you.

SEMINAR B – PTFS AND OPEN SOURCE LIBRARY MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS.

There has been much discussion lately over the potential for open source library management system software to radically extend the options that can be considered when looking for a new library system.  What are the benefits and drawbacks of going open source? What functionality do the open source products offer? How would they be implemented and supported? What are the cost implications of taking the open source route?

This seminar will look at these issues and outline PTFS Europe's role in promoting open source library management systems. It will then go on to compare and contrast two of the leading products in the field – Evergreen and Koha. There will also be brief demonstrations of these products. We will then conclude by discussing the project management, support, data conversion and other issues to consider during the implementation of an open source library management system.

As with Seminar A, we will compare the benefits of having the library system hosted by yourselves or whether to use Software as a Service (SaaS) where we can host the system for you.
